SELMA — True to their coach’s words, Central Christian Academy’s boys were a second-half team Tuesday night.

The Warriors let Morgan Academy get just three points away from tying the game in the third quarter before running away.

CCA defeated the Senators 54-44 to capture the Brian Scott Tournament at CCA’s gymnasium.

“We have been a second-half team,” CCA coach, the Rev. Carl Rawls, said of his 4-1 team. “We put man-to-man pressure on them and it made a difference.”

Morgan Academy got within three points of the Warriors 31-28 early ikn the third quarter.

But Central Christian finished out the quarter with four treys to take a 43-28 lead.

Morgan coach Eli Jackson said he was pleased with his team’s progress so far in the 1-1 season.

“In the last two nights, the offense has been where I wanted it to be,” he said. “I thought we were competitive and that we shot well from the free-throw line.”

Central Christian’s Bryant Rawls led all scorers in the championship game with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Pierre Coleman added 11 points.

Rawls and Coleman were named to the all-tournament team from CCA, along with Darius Barlow, who had 13 rebounds.

Rawls was the tournament MVP.

For Morgan, Forrest Hughes led the Senators with 14 points , followed by all-tournament selection Coal Brown with 11 and Jody Glover with 10.

Bessemer Academy’s Lady Rebels took home the championship trophy behind the 19 points of Ashley Rodgers.

Bessemer manhandled Hooper Academy 54-36 for the title.

The victory kept the Bessemer Academy Lady Rebels unbeaten so far this season at 5-0. Hooper fell to 2-3 on the season.

Also for Bessemer, Jasmine Evans added 18, followed by Kyla Rooks with 13.

Toni Flowers paced the Hooper squad with 18 points.

Miranda Raybon followed with 14.

On the girls’ all-tournament team were Flowers of Hooper, with Rooks, Rodgers and most valuable player Evans of Bessemer, and CCA’s Kara Rawls.

Rawls pumped in 27 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Warriors to third place in the tournament.

CCA defeated Morgan 60-35 for the trophy.

Sha’Nique Coleman added 15 points and six steals for CCA’s girls. Chelsea Perry contributed 10 points and 10 assists.
