Battle of Selma bigger and better than ever

The 2008 version of the Battle of Selma reenactment will literally leave a booming impression on spectators.

Events kick off April 16 and continue Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the public. The Battle will take place in Riverside Park, and according to Yeargan, will be bigger and better than ever. Friday&8217;s events, which include a cannon firing, will be free to the public.

Friday, gates open to the public at 3 p.m. A full listing of events is available at the event&8217;s web site, http://www.battleofselma.com.

Saturday and Sunday, tickets are $5 and include the battle reenactment, a tour of the Confederate, Union, and civilian camps as they prepare for battle, and a tour of historic homes for ladies.

Saturday at 7 p.m., the Battle of Selma Grand Military Ball will be held at Sturdivant Hall. It is open to the public, though period dress is required.

Period clothing, such as shirts and dresses, can be purchased through onsite vendors called

&8220;sutlers.&8221;

A handicapped area at the Satterfield gate entrance is new this year, and Yeargan said it is the best view on the site.

Sunday is the grand finale, and there will be a special surprise.&8220;I&8217;d rather wait and let people see what it is,&8221; Yeargan said.
