James Howard

Mr. James Howard, age 55, a resident of Selma, Alabama died on Friday, March 17, 2006 at Jackson Hospital.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2006 at 1:00 pm at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Lee A. Green officiating and Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Howard is survived by his wife, Shirley; one daughter, April (Marcus) Page of Selma, AL; one sister Elma (Theodore) Moseley of Butler, AL; six brothers, John Howard, Jimmy Howard, Samuel Howard of Butler, AL, West Howard of New Orleans, LA, Hiram Howard of Meridian, MS and Thomas Howard of Irving, TX; one aunt, Carrie Mae Moore of Mt. Vernon, AL; three uncles-in-laws; three aunts-in-laws; six sisters-in-laws, Alberta Sanders, Betty P. Fitts, Olla (James) Moore, Gertie (Norman) Carter, Marilyn (Walter) Maresette of Selma, AL and Barbara J. Moore of Fairfield, CA. A special godmother, Bernice Lewis of Selma, Al; three special nieces, Anita Collins, Michelle and Keisha Moseley and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Bulger Hancock

Erma Jean Bulger Hancock, 74, died on March 21, 2006 at her residence.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, March 23, 2006 at Chestnut Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Cooper, AL with Rev. Dan Martin officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Hancock is survived by her husband, Edward E. Hancock of Selma; son, Mike Hancock of Selma; daughters, Linda Hancock Harrison and Cynthia A. Hancock both of Selma; brother, Tony Bulger of Prattville; grandchildren, Holli Closson, Ed Harrison, Emily Hancock and Erin Hancock Wilson of Selma, Heidi Hawke of Dothan; great grandchildren, Chandler Closson, Duffy Harrison and Abbey Closson.

Mrs. Hancock was preceded in death by a son, Duffy Hancock.

Ed and Mark Hancock established the Chick “N” Treat drive in restaurant on Highway 80 east in 1965.

They also operated Hancock’s Hickory Pit on Selma Avenue in 1967.

In 1973 they opened Hancock’s Country BBQ on Highway 22 West in Selma, until their son Mike and his wife Deborah assumed operation in 1980.

We’ve met so many wonderful friends in our many years. We love all of you. Please pray for us in this time of sorrow. Our beloved mama will be missed. The Hancock Family.

Family visitation will be 5:30 to 7:30 on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at Lawrence Funeral Home.

Dorothy L. Washintgon

Dorothy L. Washington, age 55, of Selma, Alabama died on March 17, 2006 at Vaughan Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 24, 2006 at 1:00 pm at Ebenezer Baptist Church with John Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Cemetery with Walker Mortuary directing.

Survivors include: two sons, John (Stephanie) Washington of Orrville, AL and Terrelle Washington of Selma, AL; two daughters, Belinda Washington of Atlanta, GA and Gwendolyn Washington of Selma, AL; three brothers, Michael Steele and William Steele of Selma, AL and George (Clara) Page of Nashville, TN; three sisters, Margret Thomas and Barbara Brown of Selma, AL and Gwendolyn (Charles) Waugh; fifteen grandchildren, one daughter-in-law, one brother-in-law, one sister-in-law, and a special friend, Dennise Martineer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Washington and her parents, William and Lestine Steele.

Pallbearers and Honorary Pallbearers will be family and friends.
