While many will spend Easter weekend in a furious hunt for brightly colored eggs, others in Selma will be scouring the ground in search of something else entirely.
The Sweep Selma Clean Campaign will take place this weekend with citywide litter
pick-up as well as collection of large trash items by the city’s
General Services Department.
“That’s a busy weekend but you’ve got to start somewhere,” Dr. Park Chittom Sr. of One Selma said in Monday’s City Council meeting.
The campaign will start officially Friday night at 5 p.m. with a kick-off rally at the old Big Lots parking lot.
Workers can pick up supplies, directions and refreshments.
On Saturday, workers throughout Selma’s eight wards will be collecting litter and trash.
School groups, volunteers and concerned citizens will go to work.
There will be awards for school and ward winners.
Garbage trucks will be strategically placed in school districts so workers can drop off the bags of cups, paper, cans, bottles, and other trash items carelessly left about the city.
Most- if not all- of Selma’s City Council members have committed to help with the effort.
Each ward will have a pick-up point:
Ward 1- Meadowview Elementary
Ward 2- Central Christian
Ward 3- Byrd School
Ward 4- Cedar Park School
Ward 5- Selma High baseball field
Ward 6- Corner Etheridge Avenue and Plant Street
Ward 7- CHAT Academy
Ward 8- Kingston Elementary
The following week-March 28 through April 1-General Services will remove large trash items like old appliances, furniture and abandoned cars .
Large items must be placed in front of the house on the days that trash is usually picked up.
“From my standpoint, there is a tremendous amount of interest from the city to get this done,” Chittom said.
