Forget about Punxsutawney Phil, one of the sure signs that spring is just around the corner is the arrival of Little League baseball. From the major leagues to the sandlot down the street, the crack of the bat will be resounding soon.

The 2016 Valley Grande Little League program is launching their new season this week.

They have come a long way since the beginning year of “T-ball.”

It has long been a part of the vision of the community to begin girls’ softball. That will be the newest addition in the lineup for the city.

The following divisions are available for 2016.

T-ball is for boys and girls ages 3-5. This is the only co-ed division. Coach pitch baseball is available for boys ages 6-9. Player pitch baseball is set up for boys ages 9-12.

The city has some exciting news for the young girls of the area. Younger girls, ages 6-9, can sign up for “coach” slow pitch softball. For older girls, ages 9-12, player fast pitch will be available.

With area middle and high school successful softball programs, this should be a welcome addition to the program in Valley Grande.

Registration forms are available at the Valley Grande City Hall on Highway 22. Official registration takes place this week. Children can be registered on Thursday and Friday between 5-8 p.m. at the Valley Grande City Hall.

At registration, parents will need to fill out a basic registration form, sign a “Proof of Insurance” waiver and bring a copy of the participant’s birth certificate (even if they have played before).

The cost of the program continues to be one of the best values around. T-ball and coach pitch is $45 per participant. Player pitch levels will cost $50.

The cost includes their uniform (hat, shirt, pants and socks). This has always been helpful to parents who do not have to chase uniform parts all over town or even out of the area. Athletes only need their choice of shoes and a glove.

Please make checks payable to the “City of Valley Grande.”

Practices will begin shortly after registration. Games will be played on Friday nights and Saturday mornings at the Valley Grande Baseball/Softball Complex.

Hundreds of family members and friends converge on the city ball complex every game to enjoy a few hours of fun and relaxation.

There is always ample parking at the complex.

A “snack shack” is on site offering a wide variety of food and snack items for those in attendance. It is a win-win situation.

The city baseball/softball complex and adjacent park represent the commitment of Valley Grande to the needs of children and families throughout the area. It has always been a wonderful and safe place to bring the family.

Whether you are under “the lights” or enjoying the sunshine of a Saturday morning baseball makes life “Simply Beautiful.”
