With his team not hitting the ball the way he’d like them to be, Morgan Academy softball coach Ed Miller broke out a broom and made the Senators use it to hit wiffle balls.

He said although the method is unconventional, it tremendously helps bat speed.

Apparently, it works.

Morgan Academy had no problem scoring runs in a doubleheader sweep of Hooper Academy Tuesday. The Senators won game one 10-3 and game two 16-6.

Auburn signee Kendall Veach hit three home runs in the two games — including two in the first game — and totaled 8 RBIs to lead the way.

“We’ve made some adjustments and brought out some old timey stuff I did at Dallas County [High School] that’s worked,” Miller said. “I know people come in and see we’re swinging a broom at practice at wiffle balls and people look at us like we’re crazy, but it builds your bat speed up so much. We’re doing some crazy stuff.”

The Senators (20-4-2), who play in Class AAA, region 2, clinched an undefeated regular season area championship with the wins.

“The big thing is we don’t have to play the sub-region,” Miller said.

“It puts us automatically in the region and puts us automatically in the state. Now we can start working on the state. We don’t have to worry about some team we have to beat to make it to the state.”

The second game was the more competitive of the two as Hooper twice took three-run leads. Morgan rallied from an early 3-0 deficit with three runs in the third. Jordan Averette’s two RBI single tied it 3-3 and the Senators, who had zero outs, seemed destined to score more. Hooper got out of the inning, as the Senators stranded Averette on based.

However, Hooper reclaimed the lead quickly with a three run fourth to make it 6-3.

Then, the bottom of the fourth inning happened. Morgan amassed eight hits and scored 10 runs to break the game wide open. The Senators batted completely around in the inning.

Veach started the scoring with a double off the fence that scored Cassidy Lawrence and Lauren Criswell to cut Hooper’s lead to 6-5. A RBI double by Ansley Smitherman tied the game and a ground rule double by Caitlyn Wilkerson push the Senators in front.

A third straight double, this one by Averette, made the score 8-6 and a single from Anna Gail Hubbard tallied another run.

Lawrence’s bunt brought in another run and a Criswell bloop single made it 11-6.

Veach put the final touches on the inning with a laser that cleared that cleared the outfield wall — her third homer of the day — to make it 13-6.

Morgan pitcher Margaret Mims sat the Hooper batters down in order in the top of the fifth, allowing the Senators a chance to end the game after five innings due to the 10-run forfeit rule.

Singles by Ashley Horton and Jeni Redd made it 15-6 Senators. Criswell ended it, hitting the ball into the outfield to score Redd.
