A camp at Wallace Community College Selma is giving youth a fun way to spend part of their summer.

A day at Camp WCCS begins with participants having a few stretches in the gymnasium. Afterward, campers break off into their designated classes, where they will learn reading, science and math. Each course is one hour long. Lunch will be served after classes end. The rest of the day will be filled with crafts and other activities.

“They’ll have weekly activities where they will paint and participate in culinary classes,” said camp director Ebony Rose. “Community representatives will come in to cook and draw. We just have so much planned for them this summer.”

In fact, a lot will also be done outside of the WCCS campus. Students will take weekly field trips to locations like the 4-H Center and the Battleship Memorial Park.

Some of the activities at this year’s camp are centered around the camp’s theme: “Art You Glad it’s Summer.” Rose said she chose the theme because she wanted children to have the chance to express themselves artistically.

“We have a lot of students who love performance arts and visual arts, and they don’t get the chance to express themselves,” she said.

She said she wants children to become doctors and lawyers, but she also wants them to know it’s okay to be an artist, singer or whatever they put they choose.

“It’s a fun learning environment to put kids into this summer,” Rose said. “It’s something positive, and it’s a place where children can be educated and enhanced. If you’re questioning what your child is going to be doing this summer, I would bring them to camp WCCS.”

The camp is for children in third through eighth grade and will run from June 1- July 2. The camp will be open on Mondays-Thursdays at 8 a.m. and run through 3:30 p.m. On Fridays, the camp will open at 8 a.m. and go until noon. There’s a $50 deposit fee, and the cost to attend is $70 per week. The deadline to register is May 1. For more information, contact WCCS at 876-9227.
