CCA women move foward to USCAA semifinals

Concordia College Alabama head women’s basketball coach Eric Jackson knows how to keep his team focused on the task at hand.

Fresh off a dominating 83-63 victory over St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn in the first round of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association national championship quarterfinals, Jackson wanted to talk about his team’s 25 turnovers.

“I’m happy but I’m not satisfied with our performance today,” Jackson said. “The girls understand that and they are going to work to get better. The team we are playing [Friday], they are going to capitalize on some of the mistakes.”

The Lady Hornets won their 24th consecutive game Wednesday after taking a 44-23 lead at halftime and cruising the rest of the way. Tykeria Johnson scored 21 points on only 15 shots, while adding 8 rebounds.

“She’s spoiling me,” Jackson said with a laugh. “I’ve got to say that.”

The Lady Hornets seem to have their minds set on winning another USCAA crown, which would be the school’s fifth. The Hornets out rebounded Brooklyn 51-32 Wednesday and beat them 28-5 in bench points.

After adding six junior college transfers in the offseason, it was the CCA bench that had Jackson so excited going into the year. Now it’s paying dividends.

“Even though we won it last year, we understand how tough it was only playing six or seven people everyday,” Jackson said. “To be able to go eight or nine or even ten players deep any night and not lose anything is big.”

Ten players scored Wednesday for CCA.

Jennifer Rosado scored 14 points and Desiree Wilson and Gaybrell Garrett had 10.

CCA held Brooklyn to 37.1 percent shooting, while the Hornets made 49.3 percent of their field goals. CCA also added nine three-pointers.

CCA will face fifth-seed Daemen College Friday at 11 a.m.

Jackson said the Hornets will spend their off day studying film.

The tournament is being played at Penn State Fayette in Uniontown, Pa. The championship round of the tournament will be held March 7.

The Concordia men were also in action Wednesday against Florida National. Results of the game were not available at press time for the Times-Journal.
