After opening up a huge halftime lead on Huntingdon College Wednesday night, Concordia College Alabama coasted to a 106-79 victory.

The Hornets led 59-37 at halftime and jumped out to an 80-50 lead early in the second half.

“We wanted to make them play our tempo and we knew if we could get out and make them play our tempo and put four or five guys in double figures scoring, we knew we had a real good shot at beating them,” Concordia head coach Fredrick Summers said.

Summers said his team did a great job of speeding the Hawks up and continuing their intensity the entire game.

“We had guys that stepped up and that was part of the gameplan,” Summers said. “We told them coming in that we needed everybody to step up in this ballgame because we are going to need that down the line.”

Jeremy Sturdivant led the Hornets with 23 points, three assists and two rebounds. Tavin Cummings added 19 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Huntingdon head coach Mike Pugh said his team struggled to break the press.

“The first half we had 15 turnovers,” Pugh said. “We played a lot of young guys and some guys that aren’t ready to play yet. We didn’t play very well and didn’t handle it very well.”

The Hornets jumped out to a quick 42-16 lead after a 26-3 run in the middle of the first half. From there, Concordia took a 22-point lead into halftime, but Summers made sure to stress to his team to keep the intensity up.

“Huntingdon shoots the ball very well and that lead we had at halftime could have easily dwindled,” Summers said.

The Hornets continued to play hard, leading throughout the second half. Concordia never trailed in the game and led by 20 points or more the entire second half.

Austin Hill led the Hawks with 32 points.

Next up for the Hornets is Fort Valley State College.

With the win, Concordia is now 7-3 on the season.
