Euel James Baker, Orrville, AL, died Saturday, October 6, 2012

Mr. Baker was born in Wood, VA on December 11, 1921. His pioneer farming family moved to Dallas County, Alabama in 1926 when he was 5 years old. Mr. Baker operated a dairy and cattle farm and grew hundreds of acres of corn, soybeans, and grain sorghum on farms located at Safford and Orrville, AL.

For many years Euel Baker was active in Civitan International, a civic organization dedicated to serving individual and community needs with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities. He taught Sunday School at the Orrville Methodist Church for more than thirty years. He also served many years as the Orrville Methodist Church’s chairman of the board.

Many grown men around the area fondly remember Mr. Baker while he was active as their Boy Scout leader. Any time a neighbor or family member needed assistance or sage advice Mr. Baker always took the time to lend a helping hand. After he retired, the Selma square dancing group he belonged to enjoyed his company for many years.

Mr. Baker served his country during World War II until he was honorably discharged.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lovell Eugene Baker; two sisters, Mrs. J. P. (Marie) Majors and Mrs. Lewis Marvin (Lucille (Pat)) Bayne; two brothers, Mr. Felix Baker and Mr. Lovell Eugene Baker, Jr.

Mr. Baker is survived by his brother Curtis (Tina) Baker, Salem, OR and his sister Margaret Baker (Don) Sanders, Mobile, AL. Also surviving him are nephews and nieces: Mr. and Mrs. Herman (Linda) Majors, Orrville, AL; Mr. and Mrs. Paul (Vi) Majors, Birmingham, AL; Mr. Leon P. Majors, Safford, AL; Mr. and Mrs. Elliott (MaryBradley) Bayne, Atlanta, GA; Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Bayne (Anna Carolyn), Baton Rouge, LA; Bonnie Baker, Ph.D, Tampa, FL; Mr. and Mrs. Darrell (O’Mara) Cook, Mableton, GA; Mr. and Mrs. Travis (Trish) Roberts, Robertsdale, AL; Mr. and Mrs. David (Margaret) Christmann, OR; Mr. David Baker, KOREA. There are numerous great nephews and nieces. There are also several great great nephews and nieces.

The family extends special thanks to Jamie and Wendy Yeager of Orrville for helping take care of and watching over Euel Baker for the past couple of years.

Lawrence Brown Service Funeral Home, Selma, AL is handling arrangements. Visitation will be Wednesday October 10, 2012 at the Orrville Methodist Church 12:30 – 2:00 pm. service will follow. Rev. Tom Rimmer will officiate at the 2:00 pm service at the church, followed by interment at the Orrville Cemetery.
