Romp to help food pantry

This holiday season, reindeers won’t be the only ones running.

Members of the local community will join together for the city’s first Reindeer Romp 5K Fun Run and Walk Saturday, Dec. 10 at 9 a.m. at the Bloch Park Pavilion. Proceeds from the event will help to benefit Christian Outreach Alliance food pantry.

Bill Porter, who helped to spearhead the event, said because of the success of October’s Paint the Town Pink 5K run, event organizers wanted to continue community fundraising efforts.

“It (the run) serves two purposes — to make more food available to (the) food pantry, which is our primary objective, and second, to get people involved in the community and give some of the benefits to those not doing as well,” Porter said.

Running for nearly 40 years, Porter said the event also serves as a motivational tool.

“Running is my passion — I’ll do anything to run,” Porter said chuckling. “If I can get other people out and mo-tivated and exercise a little bit, that’s a plus.”

Re-gistration is $7 for ages 13 and under and $10 for ages 14 and up. T-shirts can be purchased separately for $10 each. Race Day registration will begin at 7:30 a.m.

Porter said he believes the event will be well received.

“Everyone wanted to know when the next race would be,” Porter said. “If we had 75 or 100 runners for the first year, that would be a success as far as I’m concerned. We’ve reached out to all of the churches … we’re expecting a success.”

Registration forms are available at the Downtowner Restaurant, Golden Ranch Bar-B-Q & Grill, Selma Welcome Center, St. James Hotel and Hampton Inn. Registration can also be completed at Vaughan Wellness and Fitness Center or the Selma-Dallas County YMCA. For those who wish to mail in registration forms can do so to Reindeer Romp, 2111 Delanie Drive, Selma, Ala 36701. Pre-registration entries must be postmarked by Friday, Dec. 2.

A special prize will be given to the runner with the best holiday outfit. Volunteers are also encouraged.
