The Selma High School Lady Saints basketball team returns home with some valuable experience after a weekend in Madison.

The Lady Saints (3-1) finished in third place at the Bob Jones Tip-Off Tournament this past weekend in Madison at Bob Jones High School.

The Lady Saints defeated Brutech 50-41 on Friday night and fell to 61-19 against Bob Jones the next day, but would finish the tournament with a 56-34 victory over Bessemer City High School

Lady Saints’ head coach Anthony Harris said his team performed well at the tournament against some high-caliber competition.

“We matched up pretty good up there,” Harris said. “Brutech is a defending state champion. Bob Jones invited a few teams that were state champions.”

Harris said the loss to Bob Jones was tough and mistakes were a problem for the Lady Saints in Madison.

“Bob Jones is a very good team,” Harris said. “Our biggest problem up there was turnovers and foul trouble. My inside people got in foul trouble. In four games, we’ve totaled 70 turnovers, that’s 17.5 turnovers a game. Our free throw percentage is 36 percent. That’s bad. We’re going to correct all that.”

Harris said this is the first time he’s seen his team turn the ball over like this, but he’s confident they’ll correct the mistakes.

“It’s the first year we’ve turned the ball over like this,” Harris said. “It’s probably a lack of focus, but other than that, we had some good showings.

“They did a good job and I was pleased.”

Jameneshia Caver led the Lady Saints in scoring in all three games, with 22 points against Brutech, 10 points against Bob Jones and 21 points against Bessemer City.
