Though the 10th anniversary of 9/11 was less than one month ago, members of the Elkdale Baptist Church Boy Scouts Troupe 30, want to keep the memory of that day in history alive.

The troupe, along with Woodmen of the World (Lodge 3), a fraternal benefit society, presented a large American flag with the names of nearly 300 living and dead victims, law enforcement and fire fighters, during the Sept. 11 attacks to the Valley Grande City Council Monday. Names were written in both red and blue — representing the flag’s red and blue stripes.

Woodmen president Gene Wilson said the names were the ones involved in first response.

“This 9/11 commemorative flag has every individual name who died in 9/11,” Wilson said.

Founded in 1890 by Joseph Cullen Root in Omaha, Neb., Woodmen of the World is the largest fraternal benefit society with open membership in the U.S. The volunteer organization provides financial security and life insurance to those in need. With more than 1,600 members today, the organization continues to provide disaster relief efforts through the Woodmen of the World/American Red Cross partnership.

District Executive of Boy Scouts Leith Wilson said it’s very important for Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts to remember the ones who died during 9/11.

“We have a national program called Scout Surge for 9/11 events that we’ve been doing for the last several years,” Wilson said. “We encourage our … scouts to be involved in such a community service … the Woodmen’s lodge was No. 3 in the state … they partner with us and their emphasis is on patriotism.”

Valley Grande Mayor Tom Lee said he plans to hang the flag inside council chambers.

“I appreciate this and I appreciate the scouts coming, which makes it that much special,” Lee said. “We really appreciate it.”

The group also presented a flag to Selma Mayor George Evans Thursday.
