Tommy Jones, Circuit Judge for the Fourth Judicial Circuit, announces that he is seeking re-election as Circuit Judge of the Fourth Circuit. The district consists of Bibb, Dallas, Hale, Perry and Wilcox counties, and is the largest circuit (geographically) in the State of Alabama.

Jones is currently completing the last year of his third 6-year term in the Fourth Judicial Circuit, where he was first elected in 1994.

A native of Selma, Jones is a graduate of Selma High School and in 1980 received his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama, where he was chosen as a Jason Senior Honor Society member.

Jones graduated from the Cumberland School of Law, Samford University, in 1983. He was admitted to the Alabama Bar in 1984 and successfully practiced law in the private sector for 10 years. He also served the city of Selma as Municipal Court Judge from 1993 to 1994.

While engaged in private practice, Jones gained experience in the areas of family and domestic law, probate law, juvenile and criminal law and general civil litigation.

As circuit judge, Jones has presided over criminal matters including capital murder crimes, robbery, rape and other serious felony offenses. He also has presided over complex civil matters such as class action litigation, insurance fraud and wrongful death cases.

He recently received a special service award from VOCAL, Alabama Victims of Crime and Leniency, for exceptional commitment and effectiveness, and extraordinary service to victims, prosecutors and law enforcement throughout Alabama in 2009-2010.

“I am very grateful that citizens of the Fourth Circuit entrusted me to serve as judge for the past 18 years. If returned to office, I pledge to continue the same ethic of hard work, and a personal dedication to fairness and equal justice for all,” Jones said. “In the coming years our Circuit will continue to be faced with difficult challenges, issues and problems which will require strong leadership, proven legal experience and hard work to overcome. Considering recent budget and staff reductions, it is more important than ever that cases are handled in an efficient and timely manner.

Jones has three grown children, Dylan, Marleigh and Davis. As a native of and longtime resident of Selma, he has been active in several community and civic organizations and is a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
