What if the city of Selma had a public hearing about Charter Communications and only a handful of people showed up to talk?

Well, that’s exactly what happened Thursday evening.

After weeks of advertising, talking and even a survey about the service Charter gives its customers in Selma, about 24 people cared enough to attend a public hearing. Interestingly, only three council members, the mayor and the city attorney showed up.

Cable television and Internet service — or the lack of to hear some people talk — is a hot topic in Selma. Council members have told us it is one of the most complained about services in the city.

Yet, hardly anyone showed up to go on record about their issues with the communication company’s service, rates and programming.

What a shame.

The contract with Charter comes up in 2012 for a vote by the council. The council is taking an aggressive approach, lining up its arguments and working for a solution early.

Yet, many stay at home and complain.
