Armed security guards could save D Night Spot.

The Selma City Council agreed Monday to have city attorney Jimmy Nunn notify the owners of the east Selma nightclub to tell them they would need at least two security guards if they were to stay open.

Nunn said council members had several options, including increasing police patrols, requiring the owners hire security, or revoking the license of the club also known as Doney Roy&8217;s. There have been two incidents resulting in deaths outside the Maxey Street club during the past three months.

Doney Roy and Eddie Mae Stewart attended Monday&8217;s meeting, but left after several hours of waiting to be heard.

Eddie Mae Stewart said they wanted to keep their business license. They have operated the club next to their Maxey Street home for the past 10 years, and have lived on Maxey there for nearly 40 years, she said.

City officials said they did not want to punish the Stewart&8217;s because of occurrences outside their establishment, but warned to ensure the safety of residents in the area.

On Jan. 13 police were called to the club for a fight, but arrived to learn the incident was over. That night Eddie Marzette died following a crash on Maxey Street between Water and Alabama avenues. Police discovered Marzette had been stabbed in the leg outside the club and said he likely passed out before the crash.

Five men were charged in the Thanksgiving 2007 beating death of Charles DuBose and are awaiting trial. According to testimony during preliminary hearings DuBose produced a handgun outside the club and fired. After the shooting witnesses said DuBose was beaten by five men, all awaiting trial on murder charges.
