Help the community, one bid at a time.

All members of the community are invited to attend the seventh annual Selma Habitat for Humanity auction fundraiser April 1 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Carl Morgan Convention Center.

“It raises the money that we get to use to refurbish or build a house that someone gets to live in,” said Habitat board member Jennifer Brooks.

“Everyone I know of has had a good time, and it’s for a good cause.”

One of the highlights of the event is the Taste of Selma, a sampling of dishes from restaurants, like fish, coleslaw, hamburgers, barbecue, chicken, and red beans and rice. There will also be an open bar.

“All the local restaurants donate their wonderful foods,” said Nina Capps, executive director for Selma Habitat for Humanity. “There’s something for everybody. We’ll just have a good time.”

Items for the live auction will be packaged.

“They may have a car wash, a stereo and seat covers, or there may be a manicure, pedicure and monogrammed robe,” Brooks said. “They put that together as a package.”

Silent auction items will also be available.

Habitat is accepting donations for auction items or food and beverage items for guests. All donations are tax deductible.

“The board members have also been out soliciting items for the auction,” said board member Kevin Grass.

More than 100 businesses donated items for the auction or dinner for the event last year.

Sponsorship spots are also available. For $500, the name or logo of the company will be printed on the tickets and programs, displayed on banners around the event and in front of the home being built, as part of media advertisements and other promotional items.

For a $600 sponsorship, the company will receive the aforementioned items and a table for eight at the event.

Board members are still collecting items for the auction.

To donate an item, contact Nina Capps at 334-872-4409. Tickets are $15 per person, available for advance purchase from board members or at the event door. Tables of eight are available for $100 per table.

Selma Habitat formed in 1987 and has built or renovated about 50 homes in the Selma and Dallas county area.
