Selma will easily have the strongest representation in basketball during the ASHAA’s All-Star Sports Week in July.

Four Saints players and one coach will take part in the North-South exhibition games at the University of Alabama-Huntsville on July 17.

“It’s just and honor and a blessing to take part in it,” Selma girls coach Anthony Harris said. Harris and McIntosh coach Renard Davis will coach the South girls’ squad. “We’re just going to go up there and have fun. Don’t get me wrong, though. We want to win it. It’ll be nice for the South to come back with a win this year.”

Joining Harris will be junior guards Ashley Grimes and Kamesha Strong. On the boys’ side, sophomore guard Jakobe Shannon and junior center Wendell Lewis will play for the South.

Strong and Grimes were instrumental parts in a team this season that reached the Final Four in Birmingham and went undefeated in the regular season. The Saints finished the season 32-1 and set a school record for wins by girls’ team.

The Selma boys finished the season 21-6, falling one game shy of reaching the regional tournament.

Harris, who is coaching in an AHSAA all-star game for the first time, expects the game to be “just like old times.”

“It’s great to be allowed to coach two of the players that have been with me for the past three years,” Harris said. “This is the fourth girl that has made it to the all-star game since I’ve been coach here. It’s an honor to have players from Selma, and when I say that, I mean boys and girls.”
