After a four-game road swing, Meadowview Christian finally returns to Selma.

The Trojans’ last home game was a 33-0 loss to No. 6 Monroe Academy on Sept. 12.

“It’ll be good to be back to the friendly confines of Wasden Field,” said Meadowview coach Rick Jackson. “Always a lot easier on your players when they’re at home around the environment they’re accustomed to.”

Meadowview’s return comes at an opportune time as the road trip proved difficult. The Trojans earned a win over East Memorial Christian, but fell to Clarke Prep, Edgewood and Pickens.

“Been a tough road for the last five weeks,” said Jackson. “We were in some games on the road and had opportunities to win. Offense, for the most part, has done its job. Defensively, we’re just not where we need to be. Given up too much and too many big plays. Given up way too many points.”

The good news for Meadowview (3-4) is that its next opponent, Escambia (0-7), has faced its share of struggles as well.

The Cougars enter Friday’s Class AA Region 2 having been outscored 319-65. Their closest game was a 27-15 loss to Autauga.

“They’re not a bad football team,” said Jackson. “They went through some of the same things we have. Coach (Heath) Gibson will have them prepared.”

Despite their struggles, Jackson sees danger in the Trojans’ matchup with Escambia.

“When teams are hungry, they’re always dangerous,” he said. “Hopefully, we’ll respond with the same intensity, hungriness and desire to win that they do. We need to play inspired football.”

And for a Meadowview team that has lost four of its last five games, no opponent is a guaranteed win.

“I think we’re pretty much equal. There won’t be any surprises by either team of what the other is going to do,” said Jackson. “Defensively, we’ve got to make plays. We can’t give up the big plays — 6-point plays. That’s been one of our Achilles heels all season. It’s just a matter of getting out there and winning the battles.”

The Trojans’ won last year’s meeting 40-12 in the first round of the Class AA playoffs en route to an appearance in the state title game. This is the first regular season meeting between the two teams since Meadowview won 14-12 in 2005.
