The Selma City Council voted 5-4 during its meeting Tuesday to fill the vacated position. Councilman Reid Cain submitted three other names — Holland Powell, David Ousley and Randal Miller.

Voting for Vick’s appointment were council members Jean Martin, Sam Randolph, Johnnie Leashore, Bennie Ruth Crenshaw and Jannie Venter. Cain voted for Ousley, Councilwoman Geraldine Allen and Council President George Evans voted for Powell, and Councilman Cecil Williamson abstained.

Evans had suggested to the council that it delay making any decision and allow individuals to submit resumes and go through an interview process.

Crenshaw called the council’s action, “The right thing to do.”

Aubrey Vick, 70, died Sept. 19 from injuries suffered after a traffic accident.

The Water Board has a special called meeting scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday.
