Knox Elementary School held a “Muffins for Moms” event in support of Breast Cancer awareness month Wednesday morning.

The school invited the mothers, grandmothers, aunts and any other interested family members to come out to the school Wednesday morning and hear some important information about breast cancer.

Knox Elementary Principal Dr. Doris Kureton began the event by welcoming the family members of the Knox students.

“Knox in pink is a beautiful thing,” said Brown, referring to the pink ribbons and posters around the school. “Breast cancer is an ugly thing but it unites families in a powerful way. Today, we celebrate those who have recovered and remember those we have lost.”

Knox Elementary School Nurse Marjesta Willaims then shared her own story about her fight with breast cancer.

Williams encouraged everyone in the room to be proactive, and do all they could to detect breast cancer before it became too serious.

“Even if you don’t think about it, it could still be there ‘doing what it do’ as the kids say,” said Williams.

Dr. Lashonda Brown, who served as Knox Elementary’s principal last year, also came back to Knox Wednesday to share her own struggle with breast cancer, which she was diagnosed with shortly after leaving Knox last May.

Brown stressed Williams’ earlier point about being proactive in being checked for breast cancer as often as possible.

“It isn’t just something to think about in October,” she said.

After hearing from the two speakers, those who attended “Muffins for Mom” joined the Knox students outside for a “Walk for a Cure” organized by Knox P.E. Teacher Coach Erica Lumpkin.

Lumpkin said that it meant a lot for her to organize the event.

“My aunt went through it… my cousin went through it. It’s touching for me to be able participate in this in support of them,” she said.
