The Selma Christmas Parade, which was rescheduled due to earlier inclement weather, will take place this Saturday at 10am.

This year’s theme is “A Magical Christmas.”

Check-in for the event will begin at 9 a.m. on the corner of Washington Street and Furniss Avenue and participants will begin lining up on Washington Street.

The parade will turn on Water Avenue and launch from the foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

From there, it will continue down Broad Street and turn on Furniss Avenue before ending at Washington Street.

The parade is a long-standing tradition in Selma. Sheryl Smedley, Executive Director of the Selma-Dallas County Chamber of Commerce, does not know when the tradition started but noted that it has taken place every year of her 29 years in the city.

This year’s parade will include a total of 77 units – 15 floats, 38 marching or walking units, 23 emergency vehicles, two bands and VIP elected officials.

Smedley noted that the event is usually well attended and, for her part, expects an even larger crowd this year if the weather cooperates.

The forecast for Saturday, according to The Weather Channel’s website, calls for only a slight chance of rain with high of 54 degrees.

No plan is in place yet for the possibility of bad weather, but parade organizers will meet Friday to discuss that and any other final details.
