Thursday’s edition of the Times-Journal felt more like a welcome mat than a newspaper, given all of the new hires that were announced within its pages. It’s rare that the news of four new administrators breaks around the same time, but that was the case on Wednesday.

Morgan Academy has a new headmaster in Mark Knight and a new athletic director and football coach in Josh Thacker. Selma High School has a new athletic director in Melissa White and football coach in Keon Handley.

We want to be among the first to welcome all the new hires to Selma. Although her position is new, White has been at Selma High School for the last decade and has operated within the school’s athletics program that entire time.

Selma High School has a relatively new principal in Emma Theresa Alexander, who was hired toward the tail end of 2015, and now has new coaches and leaders in its athletic department.

There is still more change to come too. A new basketball coach will be named shortly and that person — whoever it is — will likely become a popular figure in the city, given the sport’s popularity in Selma.

All the new hires have a chance to reshape the school’s athletic department by bringing fresh ideas to the table. It’s not often that a school has a complete reboot where a new athletic director, football coach, basketball coach and principal enter all within the same year.

At Morgan Academy, Knight takes over after moving from Jemison Middle School. He has a connection to Selma after playing baseball for Wallace Community College Selma in the 1980s and sounds excited to be back.

He’s the third headmaster at Morgan in the last 23 months and Thacker is the third athletic director in 25 months.

Each of their predecessors have departed for different reasons, but we hope to see both Knight and Thacker stick around for a while.

After all, consistency can only improve Morgan Academy as a whole.
