Kona Ice, a shaved ice truck company found across the United States, is now available in Selma.

Glenn McPhillips, a podiatrist at Family Foot Care, got a Kona Ice truck two weeks ago and is excited about being able to bring the business to the community. He said he’s brainstormed a side business for months, trying to find something he could add to Selma.

“I wanted to find another business that would be fun first and then second be something I could do with the kids,” McPhillips said.

McPhillips has a vision for his truck to be a regular sight at Selma events.

His wife Tomeko said she believes the truck will be good thing for the community.

“I’m supporting him because this is what he wants to do. I think it’s something everyone would like. Once you say shaved ice all kids want some,” Tomeko said.

The couple will also have the truck available for special occasions like birthday parties and family functions.

“We want to bring smiles everywhere we go. The children get so excited. They just freak out when they see it,” McPhillips said. “We’re going everywhere. We’ll be at sports games, birthday parties, anywhere we can go.”

He has already started to go out in the community, including last Saturday. He continued to test the waters this weekend as he tries to find a schedule that’s best for normal operating hours.

Kona Ice comes in over 100 flavors, including novelties like pumpkin spice, cantaloupe, custard, watermelon and kiwi. For special occasions, customers have the opportunity to get custom flavors as well.

The treat has 25 to 75 calories depending on the size consumed and has no high fructose corn syrup. Sizes include Kiddie for $2, Regular for $3, Kind Kona for $4, and Kawabunga for $5.
