Quarterback Club again gives back to Selma’s youth with scholarships

The Selma Quarterback Club awarded scholarships to five students Monday night at its meeting at the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center.

The club usually awards only four scholarships, but added a surprise fifth scholarship Monday in the name of the Catesby ap Jones.  Monday’s winners were Dallas County’s Tommy Kendrick, Morgan Academy’s Harrison Adams, Dallas County’s Walter Kendrick, Morgan Academy’s Jackson Henderson and Selma’s Aderick Moore.

All of the winners were awarded $4,000 scholarships and deserve a pat on the back for their excellent work on the field and in the classroom, but the quarterback club deserves praise as well. The club is one of the oldest quarterback clubs in the state of Alabama and has handed out a scholarship since 1941.

This year the club was able to award a fifth scholarship and help another student from Selma and Dallas County with the cost of college.

The importance of a group like the Selma Quarterback Club can’t be overstated. The club brings people together on Mondays during the football season for good fun and to listen to a speaker with an SEC connection. Many of the speakers are legends and this year’s lineup was tremendous.

However, the club’s leaders always reiterate the club’s main objective, which is to provide scholarships to Selma and Dallas County’s youth.

Gus Colvin, who serves as the club’s scholarship chairman, said this year it was extra difficult to decide between which five candidates would get the scholarships, which says a lot about the quality of the seniors in our county right now.

With even more support, the club might one day be able to expand to a sixth scholarship and more.

That’s why it’s so important that we continue to support the club and organizations like it around Selma.
