Every time a car passes by Patricia Lewis’s house on Maxey Street, she’s on edge.

Lewis said the fear is because her house has been shot up two times within the last week.

“Right now, I’m sitting outside on the porch, and every car that comes by it just makes me nervous because I don’t know who’s who or who’s doing what,” Lewis said Tuesday afternoon. “It’s just bad. I’m hoping they don’t come back and try that any more.”

The first shooting happened last Thursday night around 9 p.m., Lewis said.

“We were all in the house, and they just came through shooting. Both times they just came through shooting,” Lewis said.

Lewis said the shots came from high-powered assault rifles that were being fired from a car.

The second shooting happened late Sunday night with just Lewis and her 10-year-old daughter home.

“Thursday night they came and shot my house up, and then I repaired everything and then Sunday night they came back and shot it up again,” Lewis said.

According to Lt. Curtis Muhannad with the Selma Police Department, the shooting stems from an incident involving Lewis’s son.

“We believe that the motive behind these shootings is some kind of altercation involving the victim’s son, who is currently incarcerated at the Dallas County Jail,” Muhannad said.

Muhannad did not release the name of Lewis’s son or the details of why he was in jail.

No arrests have been made, but Muhannad said the department is still investigating and following up on leads.

“We know that possibly one to two unidentified suspects went to the residence … and fired at least 10 rounds into the residence and the car that was parked on the property,” Muhannad said.

He also said the department has beefed up its patrol in the area hoping to catch the shooters if they intend to strike again.

“We do have increased patrols in the area to maybe encounter these people coming back to the area and also to make the public feel safe and so more people won’t be victimized by these shootings,” Muhannad said.

The shots fired at Lewis’s home may not be the only ones that were fired in the area late Sunday night and early Monday morning. The Selma Police Department’s incident reports for Monday, Oct. 12 show that eight calls were made for shots fired between 12:01 a.m. Monday morning and 1:33 a.m. All eight calls came from within a one mile radius.

“We can’t determine whether these were separate incidents or if it was people calling from hearing the assault rifles going off,” Muhannad said. “Right now we’re just trying to determine if they are the same case or different cases.”
