The town of Orrville plans to show its patriotism on July 4 with the first fireworks show and Independence Day Celebration the town has ever had.

In addition to the main attraction, the day will be filled with popcorn, hot dogs, cotton candy and much more.

Orrville Mayor Louvenia Lumpkin wants citizens to know they won’t have to travel far for Fourth of July festivities.

“With this being the very first fireworks show, we want people to know you don’t have to travel far to go to a fireworks show,” she said. “In the past, they probably went to Valley Grande or Selma, but we have it at home now.”

Council member Jewell Williamson said she and Lumpkin always wanted to put on a fireworks show.

“This would just bring everybody together to be able to shoot the fireworks and enjoy,” she said. “Everybody will enjoy it together. We were just determined to make it happen and to have something different.”

In the past, Williamson said the town wanted to host the event, but she said there was a fear there might be a fire. She said the fire department has come onboard to ensure safety.

Lawn chairs and tents are welcome at the affair. Lumpkin said all attendees need to do is bring themselves and others to have a great time. Lumpkin said she and others would be arriving early.

“When you have a town that hasn’t been doing a lot in the past, when you start doing things people are just excited,” Lumpkin said. “So many people are excited about the fireworks show.”

The Fourth of July program will begin at 8 p.m. Saturday. The fireworks show will follow at 8:30 p.m. All activities will be held at the Orrville Community Center, located at 463 Academy St. For more information, call Orrville Town Hall at 996-8688.
