Selma-Dallas County Sav-A-Life is planning two fundraisers for this weekend with the pregnancy resource center’s third annual bass tournament and 2-mile Walk for Life.

The tournament and walk are two of the center’s biggest fundraisers. Sav-A-Life, which isn’t funded by state or federal government, relies solely on fundraisers.

“It really is amazing to watch the community help organizations like Sav-A-Life so that we can offer our services for free to those in need in our community,” said Jennifer Dobbs, executive director of Sav-A-Life. “Without their help, we couldn’t do this.”

The center offers free pregnancy testing, counseling and items such as diapers, wipes and clothes to pregnant women in need of help, and they have recently started offering free ultrasounds.

“We have just started offering ultrasounds, and since we started that last month we have already increased in clients, so people in the community really in need of these services,” Dobbs said. “We’ve already saved lives with it, and the women are just in awe of being able to see their baby.”

The tournament and walk are both scheduled for Saturday, May 9. Registration for the tournament will start at 4 a.m. at the farmers market at Bloch Park. The entry fee is $100 per boat. Fishermen are expected to launch from the marina at safe light, which should be between 5:30-6 a.m.

“Most of the fishermen do it because they enjoy to fish, and it is a pretty good payout for one day’s fishing,” said Steve Craig, who organizes the tournament every year.

Weigh-in starts at 3 p.m. at the marina, where prizes for first through fifth place will be awarded. First place will take home $3,000 in prize money.

Craig said 140 businesses from Selma and Montgomery have signed on to make this one of their biggest tournaments yet. Thirty-two boats have already been register, and Craig expects that number to be around 70 by Saturday.

“You can name a business in Selma, and chances are, they are a part of this thing,” Craig said. “They’re the ones that make it work. They’re the ones that make it possible. When you say Sav-A-Life, they open their pocket books.”

While the tournament is a good way to raise money, it is also a great way for the center to raise awareness and let people know what they do.

“We’ve had people show up to the tournament not even knowing what Sav-A-Life was, and by the end of the day, they were making donations,” Craig said.

The walk, which will get underway while the tournament is in full swing, is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Registration is at 1:30 p.m. at the farmers market. Participants will go on a two-mile walk around Bloch Park.

“Participants can sponsor themselves in the event, or they can get pledges from other sponsors,” Dobbs said.

The walk will come to an end around 3 p.m., where both events will merge into a family fun day, Dobbs said.

“We’re going to cook hamburgers and hotdogs, chips and drinks,” Dobbs said. “We’ll also have bounce houses and face painting. We’re trying to make it a fun family event.”
