Selma City Schools Superintendent Angela Mangum’s first days of on the job have been busy yet rewarding.

In the small amount of time she’s been in office, she has met with each central office staff member individually.

“I’m still excited and really looking forward to a bright future for the Selma City Schools System,” she said.

Mangum plans to reach out to the community through a broader form of media.

“We have plans to visit some of the radio stations to speak and ask questions, and let citizens know my vision for Selma, and my aspirations for continuous improvement in bringing everyone together as partners to do great things for students,” Mangum said.

She’s been introduced to the programs, services and pending issues regarding central office, she said.

She has been working on the development of an entry plan, which will allow her to introduce herself to the Selma City School System and the community.

“With that entry plan, I’ll be meeting one-on-one with central office staff and principals and teachers in every school, so that I can understand their perspectives,” Mangum said. “Every stakeholder has a perspective in terms of what they’re experiencing and what their aspirations are.”

Through all of the meetings and piles of agendas, Mangum has found room for a little enjoyment too.

She had the opportunity to stop by Edgewood Elementary School to meet with the teachers and staff. During her visit, she met a student who grabbed her attention.

“I met a young man, in particular, who made a great impression on me,” Mangum said. “He has grown tremendously over the last few months. I looked at some of his writing, and we had a conversation about his aspirations and progress in school.”
