Tyler woman pleads guilty to unemployment fraud

A Tyler woman was among several Alabamians convicted recently on unemployment compensation fraud.

Alabama Department of Labor Commissioner Fitzgerald Washington announced the convictions Tuesday.

Demetricia S. Marshall of Tyler was tried in Dallas County District Court on Nov. 18. An investigation by the Labor Benefit Payment Control Section determined that Marshall received a total of $3,507 in benefits to which she was not entitled.

Marshall pled guilty and was sentenced to 90 days in jail, which was suspended for two years pending restitution, and given two years of unsupervised probation.

She was also ordered to pay court costs and restitution in the amount of benefits received illegally.

A Perry County man also entered a guilty plea.

Steven M. Phillips of Marion was tried in Perry County District Court on Nov. 17.

An investigation determined Phillips received $4,505 in benefits he wasn’t entitled to.

Phillips pled guilt and was sentenced to 90 days in jail, which too was suspended for two years pending restitution, and two years of unsupervised probation. He was also ordered to pay court costs and restitution.
