One local doctor is teaming up with a grocery store to make Selma a healthier city.

Taylor Internal Medicine and Calhoun Foods have teamed up to host a free community health screening Friday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Calhoun Foods store located at 415 JL Chestnut Blvd.

Dr. Bruce Taylor, with Taylor Internal Medicine, said the event would be a chance for community members to receive a number of free health screenings and learn more about ways to improve their overall health.

“We’ll have some screenings for basic things like diabetes and high blood pressure,” Taylor said. “We’ll be measuring people’s body mass indexes, and there will giveaways and presentations featuring several local health providers.”

Taylor said employees at his office are excited for the chance to meet people from Selma and teach them how to live a healthier life.

“It’s really our way to keep in touch with the community on a grassroots level, and it can be a huge benefit to people who don’t know about health issues they may have,” Taylor said. “This kind of event can help people learn so much about their health, as well as what they need to do to get healthy and stay healthy.”

Beverly Seroy, produce manger at Calhoun Foods, said the event is one way the store wants to help make Selma a healthier city.

“Here at the store, we have been promoting healthy eating habits for a long time through some other programs we have started, but we want to use Friday’s event to promote healthy living in general,” Seroy said.

Seroy said she worked together with Calhoun Foods’ store director Phyllis Pierce to make Friday’s event a reality.

“I haven’t done this alone,” Seroy said. “Phyllis and I realized this is something we needed to do because there is a great need for screenings like this in Selma.”

For Taylor, Friday’s event is a chance to help the community that has helped him stay in business.

“I think its good to be able to give back,” Taylor said. “The people here have been every good to us, and this is really just one small way we can reach out and give something back.”
