Selma police have arrested a Selma man on a drug charge.

Christopher Dewayne Shelton, 26, was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance. His bond was set at $500.

On Thursday about 11:50 p.m. officers heard loud music coming from a vehicle in the 300 block of Broad Street. Officers stopped the vehicle and spoke with the driver, according to Sgt. Doug Stewart, administrative division commander for the Selma Police Department.

An officer went to the rear of the vehicle to write a citation and noticed the drive make a sudden movement toward the center of the inside of the vehicle, Stewart said.

“Fearing for his safety, the officer asked the driver to step out of the vehicle and the officer checked the area,” Stewart said.

The officer discovered a clear plastic bag containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana.
