The Selma Police Department is preparing to give away hundreds of free bicycles on Friday.

The event will be Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the police department.

Detective Lt. Curtis Muhannad said the bikes have been sitting, unclaimed in a warehouse for several years.

“The main reason we are giving them away is because we need the space,” Muhannad said.

The bikes will be raffled off, he said. Each bike will be numbered. Attendees will each get a number that corresponds to a bike. After drawing a number, the bikes can be taken home for free.

Bikes in severe condition will be discarded, Muhannad said. Police department employees will repair those with minor damage.

“Most of them just have a small problem, like a flat tire,” he said. “They will just need to put a tube in the tire and it will be good.”

Bicycles not claimed will be discarded.

The department previously asked locals with proof of purchase to pick up the bikes on Nov. 14, but Muhannad said no one showed up.
