Take safety into account this Fourth of July holiday

Although the Fourth of July, which falls this Thursday, is a time to celebrate our freedoms and those who fought—and fight—for them, we also remind residents to remember proper safety measures.

Fireworks are a classic way to commemorate this special day. Bright colors and “loud booms” have a way of bringing awe to all who see them light up the night sky.

However, fireworks and other party favors that require a match — like sparklers — also pose potential danger. We encourage residents to use these items with responsibility and caution. Always have adult supervision and give room to light fireworks.

Also, we all know that fireworks and alcohol don’t mix. Please, drink responsibly, and if you choose to do so — stay away from the matches.

The Nation Council on Fireworks Safety offers a few guidelines that will ensure a happy, and safe Fourth of July: never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully, keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap, never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers, never point or throw fireworks at another person and of course, never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.

According to the council, on average, 200 people go to the emergency room every day with fireworks-relates injuries in the month of July and around the holiday. We hope to see zero injuries in Selma and Dallas County this Fourth of July.

Aside from safety precautions, we encourage everyone to have a happy and safe Fourth — and to remember why we celebrate this special day each year. Freedom, as history has shown, is not free — and we need to thank those who paved the way for that freedom every day.
