Ladies who attended the luncheon at Sturdivant Hall Wednesday got to preview all of the latest spring fashions as models walked around each of the 14 tables in Sturdivant’s main floor.

Women were served a lunch provided by Joyce’s catering and everyone seemed especially surprised by pudding dirt cup desserts that were served in miniature terra cotta pots.

The purpose of the event was not only a social outing, but also to show those who attended what kinds of specialty gift and clothing items are available locally — to prove that women in town can shop at places such as Allez-oup and the Sturdivant Hall Gift Shop without having to travel elsewhere.

“We had 70 seats that we could fit inside of Sturdivant — it was brought inside by the threat of rain,” Sandy Greene, board member for Sturdivant Hall said. “We would love to make this an annual event because this is maybe the third time we have done this.”

Greene said that in past fashion show events it has been great exposure for the boutiques and gift shops that featured clothes. This year, Allez-oup which is now in the old Shoe Palace space on Broad Street and the Sturdivant Hall Gift Shop showed off umbrellas, children’s outfits and other spring fashions like scarves and jewelry.

“Some people who came today have never been to Allez-oup or our gift shop,” Greene said. “but they saw today that we have all of those things available in Selma.”

Valerie Chittom who sat with friends and attended the luncheon said she thought the show and all of the clothes appealed to a broad age group.

And Deidre Russell who sat next to her at their table said it was great to see all of those items in Selma.

“Its great to know you don’t have to go to Montgomery or Atlanta or Birmingham to get these great things,” Russell said.
