Due to the weather forecast, which predicts a 70 percent chance of rain Friday, the Dallas County Relay for Life event set for April 19 has been moved from Memorial Stadium on Dallas Avenue to the Wallace Community College Selma gymnasium and will still begin at 6 p.m.

The decision was made and confirmed Tuesday night after event coordinators said getting rained out wasn’t a chance they wanted to take.

“We’re going to move the relay this year,” Tanya Miles, events chair for the Dallas County Relay for Life said. “It’s going to be different this year, but we’re going to do it, because we have God on our side.”

Miles said the gym may still be able to accommodate the 10×10 pop up tents teams frequently use for decorations, but noted that if they are not permitted each team will still have an assigned area sectioned off with tables.

The annual event, Miles said, is one that is going to be a fun night for everyone.

“It’s a big party with a purpose,” she said. “This year we’re decking out cancer, so the teams have chosen different decades. So if there’s somebody who wants to go down memory lane, Friday night will be the night. If anybody has any bellbottoms they’re just itching to put on, or any afro wigs — come out with them, now’s the time.”

The teams for this year’s relay event are down from last year, Miles said. As of Tuesday there were 37 teams registered, but Miles said it is not too late to form a team.

“Cancer has no respect for person, and we need everybody to be involved,” she said. “Dallas County is a big county and we have our people here who need help. We’re here in the Black Belt and we’re supposed to be the poorest county, but when our people show up, they show out.”

Miles said all funds raised for Relay for Life in Dallas County will go to serve those in Dallas County. To sign up for a team contact Miles at 334-412-9675.
