Details on how an accident Monday evening on Highland Avenue occurred are still under investigation. What is clear is one person was killed and three people in a CARE Ambulance were injured.

According to Sgt. Roy Nix, with the Selma Police Department, a 4-door sedan, traveling west on U.S. Highway 80 near Bell Road, reportedly swerved into oncoming, east bound traffic, striking a CARE Ambulance nearly head on.

The driver of the sedan, Alexis Jermaine Lee of Plantersville, was injured and later declared dead at Vaughan Regional Medical Center.

“We do not have any information as to what may have caused the accident — or if alcohol or drugs were involved — at this time,” Nix said. “We’re still investigating.”

As for the ambulance, the driver, the paramedic who was in the back of the ambulance attending to a patient, and the patient, were all three injured in the accident. Information on the extent of their injuries was not known.

Nix said the ambulance was en route to Birmingham to take the patient to St. Vincent’s.

All three were transported back to Vaughan.

The accident reportedly happened shortly before 8 p.m. and Nix said the scene was not cleared until after 11 p.m. due to the amount of oil and debris that was left on the roadway.
