With Thanksgiving a mere week away, it is safe to say we are entering the most cheerful season of all—the holiday season.

On the minds of everyone are famiy gatherings, gift giving and spreading the holiday spirit. However, it is important to remember that a Grinch is lingering around the corner that can quickly put a damper on all our holiday joy.

This is also the season for the influenza virus, more commonly known as the flu. And thankfully, Selma and Dallas County is making sure all residents have easy access to a quick and easy flu vaccination.

Several locations, such as Walgreens on Highland Avenue, are offering flu shots this season. And if you have Medicaid or Medicare, the shot is free.

Also, it is important that children and elderly make sure to get a shot this season as these age groups are most susceptible to catching the virus.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, even if you’ve been vaccinated the previous season, it is important to get another one because each flu season is different. Also, the CDC encourages everyone to get the shot because it is the easiest way to prevent getting the flu. Contracting the flu virus can also worsen existing chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes and heart disease, according to the CDC.

So, don’t let the flu get in the way of your holiday festivities this season.

Get the flu vaccine and send the Grinch on his way.
