Residents in Selma need to clean out their closets and round up their trash.

Another clean up litter day is coming July 10.

“We’ll need it that time after the Fourth of July,” said Mayor George Evans as he made the announcement.

The city-wide cleanup day is set to run from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

“I think this is a wonderful opportunity for people to get rid of their household and street trash and all that stuff in the yard,” said council member Susan Keith of Ward 2. Keith is chair of the garbage subcommittee.

Residents are urged to pull household goods, trash, limbs and other yard debris, recyclables and furniture to the curb for pickup.

Evans said no appliances, electronics, household garbage, hazardous waste or pesticides, construction debris or tires will be accepted.

In addition to the cleanup day, Evans has asked council members to appoint block captains in each of the eight wards to help police litter in the area. Council members will announce those appointments soon.

“I have my block captains ready to go,” said council member Angela Benjamin of Ward 4. “We are ready for this. This is real.”

And, beginning Friday, June 25, the city Public Works Department will stage trash trailers in areas throughout each ward, Evans said.

Ward 8 will begin the monthly trash trailer rotation and the project will work backward.

Public Works Department workers will drop off trash trailers on June 25 at 3 p.m. and pick them up on Monday, June 28 at 7 a.m.

Trash trailers in Ward 8 will be placed at Division Street and Annie Cooper Avenue; Mechanic Street and Mulberry Avenue; Clark Avenue and Lawrence Street; and Alabama Avenue between Marie Foster and Maxey Street.

Items disallowed at curbside pickup on cleanup day will not be allowed in the trailers, Evans said.

On Friday, July 2, at 3 p.m., the Public Works Department will drop off trash trailers in Ward 7 and pick them up on Tuesday, July 6, at 7 a.m.

Locations for the Ward 7 trash trailers include Young Street and Minter Avenue; Church Street and L.L. Anderson Avenue and at Edgewood School in the field.

Evans will announce the schedules and locations for Ward 6 and Ward 5 at the next city council meeting.
