Thieves were apparently so desperate for loose change they were willing to break down a wall to get to it, according to police reports.

Sometime between Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, unknown suspects entered Carquest Auto Parts on Hickory Road by breaking through a wall at the back of the building.

They also damaged the wiring to the business’ alarm system.

The thieves took $200 worth of assorted batteries, nearly $150 in coins, and a bubble gum machine, according to the report.

This was the second time the auto parts store has been burglarized in the past two weeks.

Sometime between June 11-13, thieves broke into Carquest and stole more than $1,300 worth of products and tools. Some of the items taken during the first burglary included 24 packs of Triple A batteries, a TV/VCR combo, a battery charger, a 20-ton jack, assorted tools, a tire hammer and floor mat set, the police report indicated.

Lt. David Evans said there have been several similar break-ins in the area over the past few weeks.

Police are currently investigating these crimes.
