Offensive lineman LaChavious Simmons dreams of becoming an NFL player and helping his hometown at the same time.
The Lachavious Simmons Foundation, in partnership with the City of Selma, is presenting his inaugural youth football camp on Saturday at Bloch Park from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The camp is for ages 5-16. Registration begins at 8 a.m.
Simmons grew up in Selma and graduated from Selma High School in 2015. Simmons is currently on the Tennessee Titans’ roster. Simmons, who played collegiately at Tennessee State University, was a seventh-round pick of the Chicago Bears in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Four years ago, Simmons said he’s proud of his Selma roots.
“I take great pride in being from Selma,” Simmons said. “I love my city. Every year we have the Jubilee festival to remember those who marched across the bridge, and I always attend the event. There’s a great pride in being from here.”
Southside head football coach Charles Moody Jr. will be one of the volunteer counselors and is excited about the opportunity.
“I’m very excited and honored for the opportunity,” Moody said. “To be able to work in conjunction with an NFL guy to give back to the community is very humbling.”
