Selma Rotary Club host Renee Wilkerson Day

Morgan Academy senior Leila Kelly won a first-place scholarship during Renee Wilkerson Day on Monday hosted by the Selma Rotary Club. 

Kelly, who plans to go to Auburn University after graduating high school next month, said she is honored.

“It’s honestly such a blessing,” Kelly said. “I loved having the opportunity to talk about what I’m passionate about to a group of such amazing people while earning scholarships to further my education. College is super expensive, so it’s nice that organizations like the Rotary Club notice that and try to help out the youth.’’

Li’Donna Woods of Dallas County High was second, while Julius Hayes of Southside High took third. The other three participants who received scholarships: Anthony Richardson of Keith High, Christie Boswell of Ellwood Christian Academy and Seir Blake Perkins of Selma High.   

Scholarship amounts are between $200 and $1,500 and are named after Wilkerson, a former president of the Selma Rotary Club. She was killed in a 2017 car accident.
