The Selma Links Chapter, Incorporated is working with the Montgomery and Tuskegee Links chapters for a joint heart health event, Heart, Kidney, and Soul: Linkages to Life, at WynLakes Country Club in Montgomery on Feb. 17 at 10 a.m.

For the past four years, the Selma Links, has been deliberate about increasing their efforts to educate citizens of the Black Belt with regard to cardiovascular health.

Heart and kidney health directly impact one another. In 2022, under the guidance of Dr. Patricia Robinson, Health and Human Services chairperson, the chapter received a grant from Baxter Healthcare Corporation’s Renal Business called Black K.A.R.E. (Kidney Awareness Resources and Education).

The Selma Links reached over 10,000 people with combined in-person and virtual educational efforts, and received the grant again last year.

During the month of February, many organizations join with the American Heart Association, Center for Disease Control, and National Institutes of Health in recognition of Heart Health. Heart Disease remains the leading cause of death among Americans.

In 2020 one in five American women died of heart disease. Death from heart disease is more prevalent among African American women, Native American women, and Hispanic women in comparison to their white female counterparts. While African Americans account for 13% of the United States population, they are 35% of the 37 million adults diagnosed with chronic kidney disease.

“The collaborative efforts of the Selma, Montgomery, and Tuskegee chapters are yet another way to extend the reach and presence of the work we are doing in Cardiovascular and Kidney Health in Selma and the Blackbelt,” Selma Links Chapter President Dr. Evelyn Evans said.

Selma Dr. Patricia Robinson is one of the moderators of the combined chapter event.

The Selma Links is selling tickets for Heart, Kidney, and Soul: Linkages to Life. The cost of the tickets is $75 each, and can be purchased using the link, http://bit.ly/montgomerylinks.
