Selma native Haven Melton recently retired after working 36 years with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Melton described his aviation career as an opportunity to invest in the lives of others under his charge.

“The most rewarding part of my career was seeing others under my charge move on in their careers,” Melton said. “ I am most thankful for being blessed by God for being able to serve his country and provide examples of leadership to others.”

A 1985 graduate of Selma High School, Melton spent a year at Stillman College, then entered the Cooperative Education program to become an air traffic controller. At age 19, Melton served as a controller in Meridian, Mississippi, Memphis, Tennessee and Warrenton, Virginia. 

He later served as an Operations Supervisor, Operations Manager, Staff Specialist and Air Traffic Manager and was the first General Manager of the Memphis District, overseeing flight operations in Huntsville, Meridian, Nashville and Memphis as well as Little Rock, and Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Melton said his parents, Rev. Woodie and Ora Melton, each played a big role in him becoming a success.

“I am very thankful for my parents,” Melton said 

Ora Melton said her son’s resume provides a strong example of hard work and dedication for years.

“I believe that Haven Melton’s story is an inspiration to us all,” Ora Melton said. “He is a true example of what it means to serve your country and make a difference in the lives of others.”
