Our opinion: AHSAA should leave basketball postseason format alone

The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) changed the basketball playoff format, alterations that did no favors to schools, coaches, players and their families.

We are not happy with the new look, either.

After a girls’ team wins or loses in the area tournament finals, they play a sub-regional game two days later. Three days after a boys team wins or loses in an area tournament, their sub-regional game comes fast.

We believe the quick turnaround is unfair to the players who have little time to celebrate a championship or playoff berth.

We prefer things done in a regular way, having the sub-regional openers played the following Monday for girls and the next Tuesday for boys. Some coaches told us privately that they prefer the old format too.

The AHSAA is trying to create more of a college basketball format, with games played quickly. This is not college basketball; we are talking high school basketball. A lot of these kids will not play college basketball. We should leave prep basketball the way it is.
