Southside High School junior Derick Smith is one of the top wide receivers in the nation, something Dallas County residents already knew.

Earlier in the week, Smith had in-school visits from new Alabama football coach Kalen DeBeor and Georgia football coach Kirby Smart, who came separately to talk with the football standout.

During the Christmas holidays, Smith told The Selma Times-Journal that Alabama and Georgia were among his final choices. Based on the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs’ visits, both schools  are still high with Smith, The Selma Times-Journal’s football player of the year.

We are proud of what Smith has accomplished at Southside and we believe the sky is the limit for him at the collegiate level.

Smith has a strong base of male leaders as role models: his father, Southside head coach Charles Moody Jr. and Southside Principal Cedric Brown,

Wherever Smith lands next year in college, we will be rooting for him.
