When God told Moses He was sending him to free His people from Egyptian bondage, Moses replied, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” (Exodus 3:11).

When Saul proposed to David that David should marry his daughter (even though Saul had evil intentions) David replied, “Who am I, and what is my life or my father’s family in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?” (1 Samuel 18:18).

As we look to a new year, we need to ask the question, “Who am I?”, and examine it honestly as we move forward into 2024. What will fill the moments of life that will make up 2024? I can only examine myself and invite you to examine yourself.

I am a husband. If the Lord wills, in July we will have been married for 49 years. That relationship is so very important, but it is not the most significant answer to who I am.

I have three individuals who can call me father. I love all of them, but again that is not the ultimate answer to who I am.

Five grandchildren call me PawPaw. What a marvelous blessing they are to me. Still not the final answer of who I am.

I do PA announcing for Highland Home football, and for Faulkner University football, basketball, and baseball. I also announce the graduations at Faulkner. What a privilege, but not the ultimate of who I am.

I have preached for over 50 years. I preached my first sermon at the age of 12. I began “every Sunday” preaching at 16. It is one of the greatest honors of my life to preach the Word, but still does not ultimately define who I am.

The ultimate definition of who I am is simply this: I am a Christian. I have come to the cross and submitted in obedient faith to His sacrifice for me. That is who I really am. I wish that for you as well.
