For the first time in 13 years, the Evans Special Benefit Fund Golf Classic continues without its founder, George Evans.

Evans, who served as Selma Mayor from 2008 to 2016, died May 15, but on Wednesday, Jeannie Evans, Evans’ widow, presented $5,000 checks to Cahaba Mental Health, Selma City Schools, and Dallas County Schools to benefit special needs at the Valley Grande Golf Course.

Dallas County Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn and Stewart talked about the impact Evans and the tournament had on their lives.

“I’ll always remember when two of my kids were at the tournament and had fun,” Nunn said. “George Evans will always be remembered for starting this tournament. His family has continued this tournament without missing a beat.”

State Senator Robert Stewart said he always considered Evans as a mentor.

“I express gratitude to the Evans family for continuing this tournament,” Stewart said.

The event attracted high-profile officials, including Nunn, Dallas County Commissioner Vivian Rogers, Stewart, Selma Housing Authority Executive Director Kennard Randolph.
