Gunnar Henderson named most valuable Oriole by media

Shortstop Gunnar Henderson was named Most Valuable Baltimore Oriole by the media.

Henderson was chosen for the Louis M. Hatter Most Valuable Oriole Award by media members who cover the Baltimore Orioles.

Orioles Color Analyst Ben McDonald predicts a bright future for Henderson.

“In two seasons, Gunnar Henderson will be a household name in Major League Baseball,” McDonald told ESPN last week.”He’s only 22 years old.”

A former Morgan Academy All-American, Henderson joins Gregg Olson (1989), Rodrigo Lopez (2002) and Adley Rutschman (2022) as the only rookies to win the award.

Henderson hit .257 with  28 home runs, 82 RBI and 99 runs scored, becoming. the fourth rookie to lead the Orioles in runs, joining Cal Ripken, Jr., Willie Tasby(1959, 69), and Tito Francona (1956, 62).

The 2019 Selma Times-Journal player of the years leads all American League rookies in homers in runs, RBI, total bases, triples, and game-winning RBI (10), while ranking among AL rookie leaders in hits (2nd), doubles (2nd), and walks (4th)..

The Most Valuable Oriole Award is named in honor of the late Lou Hatter, a former sportswriter for The Baltimore Sun who covered the Orioles for 27 years.
