Southside wide receiver Erick Smith is named The Selma Times-Journal’s high school player of the week.
The junior caught five passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns in a 49-48 loss to third-ranked St. James last week.
Smith, the twin brother of highly touted receiver Derick Smith, caught touchdown passes of 65 and 53 yards.
After the game, several Southside players gave their opinions on who the Selma Times-Journal’s player of the week should be. Some thought quarterback MJ Reese, who earned the honor two weeks ago, would be a second-time recipient. Others were impressed with Erick Smith’s stellar performance.
Southside head coach Charles Moody Jr. said he was not surprised at Smith’s performance against the Trojans.
“Erick was spectacular in the game Friday,” Moody said. “He is a matchup problem. He will continue to grow and get better as well! He is starting to understand football better and better each day! He had an amazing game!! I’m so proud of that kid.”
